How To Promote Your Website?

Sometimes, promoting a website seems like a big job made up of a thousand little things. That’s because it is. Overwhelmed? We all are. So let’s take a minute or two and put things in perspective. Here’s how to promote your website: a summary of everything all at once, all in one place.

how to promote your website
The top of this chart shows the things we do as web marketers when promoting our websites. Ultimately, our job is to do three things:
  • Create content
  • Promote content
  • Measure results
Below it is a funnel that shows what our audience and visitors do.
“Nothing is particularly hard if you divide it into small jobs.”  Henry Ford had the right idea. So let’s break down each step in website promotion and add some links to useful resources.

Content Strategy

This is your plan. Let’s assume you already know who you are, your goals, and your place in the market. Assuming you already have a blog, newsletter template, email list, analytics, and a website designed to convert, here are the content strategy basics:
  • Audience: who are they, where are they, what do they care about?
  • Topics and Tone: how can you help them, how should it sound, how long should it be?
  • Resources: where will content come from, who will publish and how often?

Content Development

It starts with web pages. This is your most important and visible stuff, often called “cornerstone” or “evergreen” content. Next come your blog posts and newsletters. This is your ongoing published content, and it includes guest posts on other sites, guests on your site, and earned media (PR). Don’t forget media, such as video and audio. Finally, consider “big content” such as ebooks, infographics, white papers, research, industry surveys, etc.
This is often listed as the number one challenge for promoting websites. Don’t panic. Start with baby steps, and focus on efficiency.
  • Creating Content: Writing and producing, but also finding content you’ve already created. Useful: 5 Tips for Finding Content for Your WebsiteBlogging Criteria
  • Repurposing Existing Content: Taking existing content and converting it into another format. Break down big pieces into smaller ones. Combine small pieces into bigger ones. Useful: Content Chemistry – The Periodic Table of Content
  • Curating Content From Others: You don’t have to do all the work. Collaborate with others to produce content more efficiently. Useful: How to write when you have no ideas and no time.

Search Engine Optimization

Ranking in search engines is a great way to create awareness and fill the top of the funnel. If you’re good at search engine promotion, your traffic from search might look like this:

Search marketing can be very slow, but eventually, it can lead to a long, steady line or curve upward.
Assuming the website doesn’t have any technical flaws causing trouble, there are three main activities for promoting a website in search engines:
  • Keyphrase Research: Selecting keywords that visitors will use and Google will like. Useful:What to write. How to rank.
  • On-Page Keyword Usage: Putting those keywords in the right places the right number of times. Useful: On Page SEO Checklist
  • Link Building: Building up the trust and authority of your site by encouraging other sites to link to you (like guest blogging, for example). Useful: How to Guest Blog Like a Champion

Social Media Marketing

Social media is a way to grow interest in your website. It can drive traffic and awareness at the top of the funnel, but also to strengthen the middle of the funnel. If you’re good at social media, your social traffic might look like this:

Traffic from social sources might have lots of ups and downs, but it’s consistent over the long run.
  • Content Promotion: Promoting your content directly on social networks and targeted sharing. Useful: 33 Ways to Promote Your Content
  • Research: Finding useful people and partners – host blogs’ editors, journalists, influencers, and prospects. Also, listening for topics and mentions of your brand.
  • Online Networking: Conversation, relationship building, and promoting others’ content. Useful: 4 Step Guide to Creating Superfans

Email Marketing

This is a super powerful way to promote a website and especially useful at keeping in touch with people who are already aware of you. They’re in the middle of the funnel, and email helps to keep them interested and considering your brand. If you’re active in email marketing, traffic from these campaigns will look like this in your Analytics:
How to promote your website
If links are tracked properly, traffic from email will be segmented in your Analytics …like a heartbeat.
  • List Growth: Building an ever-growing list of interested subscribers. Useful: Email Signup Forms
  • Subject Lines, Teaser Text, Calls to Action: Subscribers open the email when the subject line is compelling (short, descriptive subject lines are generally good). They click when the teaser text and call to action are compelling.
  • Timing: Try sending emails at different times of day (mornings are generally good) and different days of the week (try sending on the weekend). Use A/B testing if your email marketing program makes this easy. Useful: Email Marketing Presentation from Wine and Web (slides 34-38)

Analytics

As you can see, we’ve been measuring things all along. Make sure that goals are set up so you can see how many visitors become leads and subscribers. Also be sure that filters are set up so traffic from your office isn’t affecting your stats.
  • Trends: Are visits from the various traffic sources going up? Are leads and subscribers going up?
  • Retro Keyword Design: Find pages that are already ranking for phrases, then edit those pages to better indicate their relevance for the phrase. Useful: Keyword Design Poker: the fastest way to increase traffic.
  • Tracking:  Are you tracking your email marketing or social campaigns? Use the Google URL Builder to see how effective your marketing is on pageviews, visits, and conversions. Useful:5 Email Marketing Secrets
Wait. What about advertising? We’re focused on content marketing here, not advertising. There are many ways to promote your website by buying traffic, but they are generally more expensive and less effective.
That’s it! That’s everything you need to know to drive traffic and promote your website. I realize this was a long post, but we hope that this breakdown makes it all seem easier. Remember, baby steps!

How to SUBMIT SITEMAPS TO BING?

Sitemaps

Sitemaps are an excellent way to tell Bing about URLs on your site that would be otherwise hard to discover by our web crawler. There are several formats you can use as sitemaps to submit to Bing:
  • XML Sitemap
  • RSS 2.0
  • Atom 0.3 & 1.0
  • Text (a plain text file containing one URL per line)

SUBMIT SITEMAPS TO BING

You have a few options to submit sitemaps to Bing:
  1. By advertising the sitemap in your robots.txt file using a Sitemap: directive
  2. By pinging Bing using a HTTP request
  3. From inside your Bing Webmaster Tools account, either directly from the Sitemap widget on your site’s Dashboard or from within the full-fledged Sitemapsfeature
We will get back to the first two options later. First, let’s look at how to submit and manage sitemaps from within your Bing Webmaster Tools account:

SUBMITTING SITEMAPS FROM YOUR DASHBOARD

You can submit your sitemap from within the Dashboard for your site in Webmaster Tools. Look for the Sitemaps widget and click Submit a Sitemap to show a text box in which you can enter the location of your sitemap file. Usually, the sitemap location will look something like http:www.contoso.com/sitemap.xml if it is an XML Sitemap or http://www.contoso.com/sitemap.txt if you’ve created a text file instead.  Either type will work equally well.
Submit Sitemap from within the Dashboard
If you have an RSS feed that is automatically updated as you publish your content it can also be submitted here.  This is useful as it will help us capture fresh content every time you publish content.  Simply copy and paste the URL for your RSS feed into the submission form and click Submit.

SUBMITTING SITEMAPS FROM THE SITEMAPS FEATURE

In addition to submitting sitemaps from your Dashboard, you can submit and manage your sitemaps in Sitemaps feature inside Webmaster Tools located in theConfigure My Site section in the navigation pane.  In Sitemaps, you can submit a sitemap as follows:
  1. Enter the full URL of the sitemap in the Submit a Sitemap text box
  2. Click Submit
Submit Sitemap (Contoso.com)
After you have submitted, the sitemap will be added to the list of sitemaps. Initially the status will be Pending. After Bing has fetched and processed the sitemap, we will update the status and the other details such as how many URLs we discovered while highlighting any issues encountered.  If you see an exclamation mark in front of a status you can see additional information about an error or issue we encountered by hovering over the icon.
Note: processing submitted sitemaps takes time and can take from a few hours up to a few days.

Resubmit

You can resubmit an already submitted sitemap by selecting the checkbox in front of the sitemap URL and clicking Resubmit.

XML Sitemap Indexes

If the sitemap URL you submitted points to an a XML Sitemap Index, you can click on the Sitemap URL and see details for all contained sitemaps.

USING A SITEMAP: REFERENCE IN ROBOTS.TXT

You can also leave a reference to your sitemap in your site’s robot.txt file. To do so, simply add the following line to your robots.txt, replacing the example sitemap location with the location of your sitemap or sitemap index:
Sitemap: http://www.example.com/sitemap.xml
For more information on robot.txt files, please refer to robotstxt.org
.

PINGING BING USING A HTTP REQUEST

If you have an automated system that generates your sitemap, you may find it easier to inform Bing about your sitemap by sending a HTTP request. Using your favorite method to send the request, use the following URL, replacing the example with your sitemap location and URL encoding everything behind the sitemap parameter:
http://www.bing.com/ping?sitemap=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.example.com/sitemap.xml
The server will respond with HTTP Status 200 (OK) if the submission was successful. Unlike the submission options inside Webmaster Tools you will not get any information about the validity about the actual sitemap itself.
noteNOTE
If you’d like more programmatic flexibility consider using the Bing Webmaster API and its methods to submit and get details about sitemaps.

XML SITEMAP VERSUS RSS FEEDS

WHEN TO USE XML SITEMAPS?

XML Sitemaps are the best way of providing Bing with a comprehensive "snapshot" of all relevant URLs on your site at a given time. Ideally, this snapshot is updated daily to keep the snapshot fresh, so that it always contains the latest/greatest overview of all your published URLs.

WHEN TO USE RSS (OR ATOM) FEEDS?

On the other hand, RSS and Atom feeds are the preferred way of informing us about brand new URLs on your site. Ideally, the RSS or Atom feed is generated in real-time and contains only your most recent new pages or posts. You can use this fresh RSS or Atom feed in combination with a comprehensive XML Sitemap.
noteNOTE
Although the URLs contained inside your XML Sitemap, RSS, or Atom feed naturally can change to reflect either the latest snapshot of your site or the last published pages or posts, the URL of the submitted Sitemap or feed should stay the same over time. You should not use date stamps or other incremental post-fixes inside the name of the XML Sitemap or feed that cause the URL to change each time you generate them.

What is sitelink? What is meant by "demote a sitelink"?

Sitelinks are hyperlinks to website subpages that appear under certain Google listings in order to help users navigate the site. The site owner cannot add any sitelinks; Google adds them through its own secret automated algorithms. If you have a Google Adwords program you can create campaign and adgroup level sitelinks. The site owner can, however, block individual sitelinks, which may be useful if he deems them unhelpful. There are a minimum of three and a maximum of eight sitelinks per site. According to John I Jerkovic, "Every site should strive to get sitelinks, as they imply authority as well as web presence. Sitelinks also occupy additional search results screen real estate, the space that pushes your competitors further down the results page — something to be desired." Sitelinks are also said to appear "on some search results where Google thinks one result is far more relevant than other results (like navigational or brand related searches)".
Search engine optimization experts consider sitelinks to be an important measure of how "trusted" a site is, and accordingly have attempted to deduce what causes them to appear. These efforts have included looking at Google patents.According to these patents, sitelinks are derived from user behavior, in particular, the number of times a page has been accessed, the amount of time spent on the page, and from the content of the page itself—whether the page contains commercial transactions, etc. In an alternative embodiment, it is suggested that web-site providers might provide the search engine system with a list of favoured web-pages within their own web-site.
Sitelinks with less than 15 characters seem to perform best, according to Google Senior Product Manager Jerry Dischler. There is also an unrelated paid Sitelinks feature associated with Google sponsored links, that allows site owners to submit up to 10 links and allow Google to pick the 4 that are most pertinent to the search.

Sitelinks

The links shown below some of Google's search results, called sitelinks, are meant to help users navigate your site. Our systems analyze the link structure of your site to find shortcuts that will save users time and allow them to quickly find the information they're looking for.
1: The main search result
2: Sitelinks
We only show sitelinks for results when we think they'll be useful to the user. If the structure of your site doesn't allow our algorithms to find good sitelinks, or we don't think that the sitelinks for your site are relevant for the user's query, we won't show them.
At the moment, sitelinks are automated. We're always working to improve our sitelinks algorithms, and we may incorporate webmaster input in the future. There are best practices you can follow, however, to improve the quality of your sitelinks. For example, for your site's internal links, make sure you use anchor text and alt text that's informative, compact, and avoids repetition.
If you think that a sitelink URL is inappropriate or incorrect, you can demote it. Demoting a URL for a sitelink tells Google that you don't consider this URL a good sitelink candidate for a specific page on your site. Google doesn't guarantee that demoted URLs will never appear as a sitelink, but we do consider a demotion a strong hint that we'll try to honor when generating sitelinks.

Demote a sitelink URL:

  1. On the Webmaster Tools Home page, click the site you want.
  2. Under Search Appearance, click Sitelinks.
  3. In the For this search result box, complete the URL for which you don't want a specific sitelink URL to appear.
  4. In the Demote this sitelink URL box, complete the URL of the sitelink you want to demote.
Once you've demoted or undemoted a sitelink, it can take some time for search results to reflect your changes.
You can demote up to 100 URLs, and demotions are effective for 90 days from your most recent visit to the Sitelinks page in Webmaster Tools.
